What Google says about the current availability of Gmail accounts
and when the Gmail service will be opened up to the general public.
How to Get a Gmail Invite from Google
In April of 2004 Google issued about 1000 invitations
to sign up for a Gmail account and participate in the beta release
of the new Google Web based electronic mail service. Google has
continued to issue invitations, usually through current account holders,
but they have become more scarce in recent weeks.
Note that there is no way for the general public to to just "sign up"
for a Gmail account or get on any official waiting list, but you
can get on a mailing list to receive more information when it is available.
